At Miller Harris, we have always worked in Eau de Parfum. It is a concentration we love for its balance of clarity, character and diffusion, allowing our fragrances to unfold with nuance and movement on the skin. Yet some compositions invite a different exploration. With the launch of Tea Tonique Extrait, and now also Scherzo Extrait, we enter a new chapter for the house: our first interpretations of fragrance in extrait concentration. For fragrance lovers, Extrait de Parfum is about more than longevity. It offers an opportunity to experience a composition through a different lens, where familiar notes gain new texture, transitions become more seamless and hidden facets emerge over time. Rather than simply amplifying a fragrance, an extrait can reveal a deeper expression of its character. What Is Extrait de Parfum? Extrait de Parfum represents one of the most concentrated forms of fine fragrance, typically containing between 25% and 40% fragrance oils. This higher concentration alters not only the fragrance's persistence on the skin, but also the way it develops. The opening can feel more rounded, the heart more expansive and the base more present. Materials that might sit quietly in the background of an Eau de Parfum are given greater prominence, creating a richer and more immersive olfactory experience. Perhaps most importantly, an extrait offers perfumers the opportunity to reinterpret a composition. New ingredients may be introduced, existing accords refined and contrasts heightened, resulting in a fragrance that feels both familiar and entirely new. Longevity, Presence and Diffusion Extrait de Parfum is often associated with longevity, and for good reason. Higher concentrations can allow a fragrance to remain perceptible on the skin for longer, with base notes revealing themselves gradually throughout the day. Yet longevity alone does not define an extrait. The experience is often one of greater depth and texture rather than sheer power. While some extraits project generously, others remain closer to the skin, creating a more intimate yet enduring presence. This distinction is important. An extrait is not necessarily louder than an Eau de Parfum; it is often more dimensional. Extrait de Parfum vs Eau de Parfum For a house such as Miller Harris, where every fragrance is created as an Eau de Parfum, the move into extrait concentration is not about replacing the original expression but expanding it. An Eau de Parfum often captures the movement and energy of a composition. Bright notes sparkle, florals bloom with transparency and contrasts feel vivid and dynamic. An Extrait de Parfum allows those same ideas to evolve differently. The structure becomes more textured, transitions more fluid and deeper materials gain greater prominence. It is less a matter of strength than perspective: the same story, told with a richer palette. Scherzo, Reimagined Crafted at 30% concentration, Scherzo Extrait de Parfum captures the vibrant spirit of the original fragrance while unveiling a deeper, more intoxicating signature. Inspired by a passage from F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tender is the Night, Scherzo has always been a study in contrast: radiant florals illuminated by sweetness, set against darker, more mysterious undertones. In the extrait, those contrasts are heightened and drawn further into focus. The familiar rush of tangerine and davana remains, bringing brightness and movement to the opening. At the heart, peony and pittosporum bloom abundantly, while rose takes on a more velvety and opulent character. Golden honey and creamy vanilla enrich the composition, while threads of incense introduce a new luminosity and vibration. As the fragrance evolves, shimmering oudh unfolds with greater texture, amplified by intensified patchouli and moss. Smooth amber woods lend warmth and refinement, creating a striking counterpoint to Scherzo's signature sweetness. The result is a fragrance that feels more enveloping, more enduring and more profound, while remaining unmistakably Scherzo. A Study in Intensity Created in collaboration with perfumer Karine Vinchon-Spehner, Scherzo Extrait was approached as a study in intensity. She shared; "In creating this Extrait de Parfum, I set out to reveal a rose steeped in darker, more sensuous red, its thorns embodied by warm patchouli and amber woods. I enrobed it in golden honey to heighten its irresistible allure, then wove in whispers of incense for a mysterious, magnetic pull. Finally, I grounded the composition in mossy earth, a quiet reminder of the flower’s humble roots." The ambition was not to create a stronger version of the original fragrance, but to preserve its unmistakable DNA while exploring its more opulent possibilities. Working with a higher concentration allowed us to emphasise texture, contrast and depth, bringing together abundant blooms, golden sweetness and darker, more resonant facets. This approach reflects what makes extrait concentration so compelling. At its best, it offers not excess, but refinement: an opportunity to experience a fragrance with greater richness, complexity and emotional resonance.
